NIT Department of Health and Human Services

The Narragansett Indian Tribe's Department of Health and Human Services (NIT/Dept. of HHS) is responsible for the oversight of the Narragansett Indian Health Center (NIHC) and the NIT Office of Social Service Programs (OSSP). Our overall mission is to focus on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention, Safety and Well-Being for the Narragansett Tribal Community.

PLEASE NOTE: the NIT Department of Health and Human Services will be developing a website soon - watch here for the link!

The Narragansett Indian Health Center (NIHC)
In recognizing the need to develop a holistic approach to medicine that would address the unique medical needs of its Tribal Members, the Narragansett Indian Tribe worked to bring a health care center to the tribal reservation and, in 1996, the construction of the Narragansett Indian Health Center (NIHC) was completed.

The services available through NIHC for eligible Tribal Members and other eligible American Indians and Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) include direct onsite medical, community health nursing, and behavioral health care services and offsite Contract Health Services. Additional program components include advocacy and outreach services, injury prevention, nutrition services, prescription medications, and environmental health services. Tribal members who wish to learn more about NIHC and its services or to schedule an appointment please call NIHC at 401-364-1268.

The Office of Social Service Programs (OSSP)
The NIT Office of Social Service Programs (OSSP) provides eligible Tribal Members who reside within our established service area, with access to social service programs including: General Assistance, Child Welfare Services, payment assistance with Burial expenses, payment assistance with Housing (rental, relocation, mortgage), Food and Clothing vouchers, Weatherization/Cooling/Heat, and payment assistance with Utilities, Emergency Hardship, and Family/Community Services. The established service area includes the Tribal reservation near Charlestown, RI and Washington County, RI.
